What is Synastry?

Synastry is the astrological technique of comparing two birth charts. It is the primary method used in relationship astrology to explore how two people's planetary patterns interact with each other.

How Synastry Works

In a synastry reading, the planetary positions from both birth charts are placed into a single comparison framework. The key question is: how does Person A's Venus connect to Person B's Moon? How does Person A's Saturn relate to Person B's Sun?

The connections between planets are called aspects. An aspect is formed when two planets are at a specific angular distance from each other. Common aspects in synastry include:

Conjunction (0°)

The two planets are in the same degree of the zodiac. This blends their energies closely — often intensely.

Trine (120°)

Considered harmonious, suggesting ease and natural compatibility between the two planetary energies.

Square (90°)

Suggests tension or friction. Not necessarily negative — squares can indicate strong attraction and dynamic energy, but may also indicate areas of challenge.

Opposition (180°)

Suggests polarity — the two energies are on opposite ends and may experience push-pull dynamics. Often found in strong romantic connections.

Sextile (60°)

A softer harmonious aspect suggesting cooperation and ease, though generally considered less powerful than a trine.

Which Planets Matter Most in Synastry?

Venus

Love language, attraction and what each person finds beautiful and desirable.

Mars

Desire, passion and how each person asserts themselves — important for attraction and potential friction.

Moon

Emotional compatibility and whether each person can meet the other's emotional needs.

Sun

Core identity — how the fundamental natures of two people relate to each other.

Saturn

Commitment, longevity and areas of challenge or discipline in the relationship.

Jupiter

Growth, generosity and where one person may expand or encourage the other.

What Synastry is Not

Synastry does not determine whether a relationship will succeed or fail. No aspect combination makes a relationship guaranteed to work, and no combination makes it guaranteed to fail.

Challenging aspects — like a Saturn square to someone's Sun — can indicate areas that require work and awareness, but many long-lasting relationships have exactly these dynamics. Easy aspects can indicate natural compatibility but do not guarantee depth or longevity.

Synastry is best used as a tool for self-reflection and awareness — not as a verdict on any relationship. All readings on Astrolade are for entertainment and self-reflection purposes only.
