What is Astrocartography?

When you were born, the planets were not only in specific zodiac signs — they were also in specific positions relative to the horizon and meridian at your birth location. These positions change as you move around the Earth.

Astrocartography projects these positions onto a world map. The resulting planetary lines show where, for example, your natal Sun was exactly rising (Ascendant line), or where your natal Venus was at the highest point in the sky (Midheaven line), at the moment of your birth.

The symbolic interpretation of these lines is the basis of astrocartography — a tool for reflection about place, identity and how different locations may connect with different themes in your life.

How Planetary Lines Work

Each planet generates four lines on the astrocartography map — one for each angular position (Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and Imum Coeli). The symbolic themes associated with each planet are expressed differently depending on which angle is involved.

A Note on Responsible Use

Astrocartography is a symbolic and exploratory tool. It may highlight interesting themes to reflect on in relation to places you have lived, visited or are curious about.

It does not predict what will happen in a given location, and should not be used as the sole basis for major decisions about travel or relocation. Many factors — practical, personal and circumstantial — influence experience in any given place.

Astrolade astrocartography readings are for entertainment and self-reflection only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is astrocartography?

Astrocartography is a form of location-based astrology developed by astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s. It works by projecting your birth chart onto a world map to show where each planetary line falls — indicating locations that may have a symbolic relationship with specific areas of your life.

What are planetary lines?

Planetary lines are the lines on an astrocartography map where a particular planet was exactly on the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or Imum Coeli at the moment of your birth. Each line is associated with the symbolic themes of that planet. For example, a Venus line is often associated with themes of beauty, pleasure and relationships.

Does astrocartography guarantee what will happen in a place?

No. Astrocartography is a symbolic system and is intended for self-reflection and exploration only. It explores themes that may be symbolically associated with a location — it does not predict specific events or guarantee any particular experience. Many other factors influence life outcomes in a given place.

Which planetary lines are considered significant?

The Sun line is often associated with vitality and recognition. Venus lines with relationships and creativity. Jupiter lines with opportunity and expansion. Saturn lines with discipline and challenge. Mars lines with energy and ambition. All lines can have both positive and challenging expressions depending on context.

Can I use astrocartography for travel planning?

Some people use astrocartography as one lens when reflecting on travel or relocation. It can be an interesting and enjoyable tool for self-exploration. It should be used alongside practical considerations — not as a sole guide to major life decisions. Astrolade readings are for entertainment and self-reflection only.

Is astrocartography the same as relocation astrology?

They are related but not identical. Astrocartography specifically refers to the mapping of planetary lines across the globe. Relocation astrology is a broader term that includes the technique of recasting your birth chart as if you had been born in a different location.
