What Are Transits?

Planets are always moving. As they orbit the Sun, they pass through each of the twelve zodiac signs and form angular relationships to the positions fixed in your birth chart. These ongoing movements are called transits.

When a transiting planet makes a significant angle to a natal planet — a conjunction, trine, square or opposition — it activates that part of your chart symbolically. Different planets bring different themes: Jupiter transits often coincide with expansion and opportunity; Saturn transits with consolidation and challenge.

Transit astrology is a framework for reflection. It can help you understand why certain themes feel prominent at certain times, and offer language for what you may already be experiencing. It does not predict specific events or guarantee outcomes.

Personal Transits vs Generic Horoscopes

A generic horoscope applies the same interpretation of current planetary movement to all people with a given Sun sign. This means it is the same for every Scorpio, every Gemini, regardless of when or where they were born.

Personal transits work differently. They connect current planetary positions to the specific natal planets in your chart — meaning the timing, intensity and meaning of any given transit is unique to your chart and when you were born.

Astrolade calculates personal transits using Swiss Ephemeris — the same astronomical data used in professional astrology software — and connects them to your saved natal chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are astrology transits?

Transits are the ongoing movements of planets through the sky. When a moving planet passes over or forms a significant angle to a point in your birth chart, it creates a transit. These are interpreted as symbolic themes or areas of life that may be worth paying attention to during that period.

How are personal transits different from a general horoscope?

A general horoscope (by Sun sign) applies the same transit interpretation to all people born in the same month. Personal transits are calculated against your specific birth chart — so Jupiter transiting your natal Moon has a different meaning and timing than Jupiter transiting your natal Saturn, and this varies from person to person.

How long do transits last?

It varies. Fast-moving planets like Mercury and Venus may transit a natal point for just a day or two. Slower outer planets like Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can remain in transit for months or even years, and are considered more significant for longer-term life themes.

Do transits predict what will happen?

No. Transits are a symbolic lens for reflection — not a mechanism for predicting specific events. They may suggest themes worth considering (e.g., a Saturn transit might invite reflection on responsibility and structure) but they do not determine outcomes. Readings are for entertainment and self-reflection only.

What is the difference between transits and progressions?

Transits use actual current planetary positions in relation to your birth chart. Progressions (also called secondary progressions) use a symbolic technique where one day after birth equals one year of life. Both are timing tools but they work differently and reveal different themes.
