What are Astrology Transits?

Transits are one of the most practical and widely used tools in astrology. They connect the ongoing movement of the planets to the fixed positions in your birth chart — offering a framework for reflecting on timing and what themes may be active in your life.

The Basic Idea

Your birth chart is a snapshot — the positions of the planets at a single moment in time. But planets don't stop moving after you are born. They continue orbiting the Sun, passing through the zodiac in a continuous cycle.

When a planet's current position forms a significant angle to a planet in your birth chart, that is a transit. For example, if Jupiter is currently in the part of the sky where your natal Sun sits, that is a Jupiter transit to your natal Sun.

Types of Transit Aspects

Transit aspects use the same angular relationships as natal aspects:

Conjunction (0°)

Planet meets natal point — often the most intense and noticeable.

Opposition (180°)

Planet is directly opposite a natal point — often involves external circumstances or relationships.

Square (90°)

Planet is at a 90° angle — may bring tension, challenge or a push to act.

Trine (120°)

Planet is at 120° — often coincides with ease or opportunity.

Sextile (60°)

Planet at 60° — a softer supportive influence.

Duration — How Long Transits Last

The faster a planet moves, the shorter its transit. The slower planets are considered more significant because they linger longer:

PlanetTransit durationSignificance
MoonHoursDaily mood themes
Mercury, VenusDays to a weekShort-term themes
Sun, MarsDays to 2 weeksMedium-term activation
JupiterWeeks to monthsGrowth and opportunity themes
SaturnMonthsMajor life structure themes
Uranus, Neptune, PlutoMonths to yearsDeep, long-term transformation

How to Use Transits for Reflection

Transits are most useful when used as a reflective tool rather than a predictive one. Rather than expecting a transit to produce a specific event, you might instead use it as a lens: "Saturn is currently transiting my natal Moon — am I noticing themes around emotional boundaries, responsibility or consolidation?"

This approach respects the symbolic nature of astrology and avoids the pitfalls of treating chart reading as a fixed forecast. Transits can help make sense of patterns you are already experiencing — they are unlikely to conjure things from nowhere.

Remember: Astrology transits are for self-reflection and entertainment only. They do not predict specific events and should not be used as the basis for significant decisions.
