What is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. In astrology, this map is interpreted as a symbolic picture of your personality, emotional patterns and life themes.

How a Birth Chart is Calculated

A birth chart requires three pieces of information: your date of birth, your time of birth and your place of birth. These are used to calculate:

  • The positions of all ten planets: Where in the zodiac the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were at your birth moment.
  • Your Ascendant (Rising sign): The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth location and time. This changes approximately every two hours, which is why an accurate birth time matters.
  • Your house cusps: The division of the chart into twelve houses, each associated with a different area of life. The exact house positions depend on both birth time and location.

What a Birth Chart Includes

A complete natal chart contains several layers:

Planets

The ten major bodies (Sun through Pluto), each symbolising a different dimension of experience — identity, emotion, communication, love, drive, philosophy, discipline, change, dreams and transformation.

Signs

Each planet falls in one of the twelve zodiac signs. The sign describes how the planet's energy expresses — for example, Mars in Aries expresses assertively; Mars in Libra seeks balance before acting.

Houses

The twelve houses divide life into areas such as self, money, communication, home, creativity, health, partnerships, shared resources, travel, career, community and spirituality.

Aspects

The angular relationships between planets — such as conjunctions (0°), trines (120°), squares (90°) and oppositions (180°). Aspects describe how different planetary energies interact in a chart.

Angles

The Ascendant (east horizon), Descendant (west horizon), Midheaven (highest point) and Imum Coeli (lowest point). These are the four most sensitive chart points.

How a Birth Chart is Interpreted

Interpreting a birth chart involves reading the combination of planets, signs, houses and aspects as a whole symbolic picture. No single placement tells the whole story — the meaning emerges from how all the pieces fit together.

For example, someone with their Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Pisces and Rising in Gemini will have a very different overall character than someone with their Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Aries and Rising in Scorpio — even though they share the same Sun sign.

Astrolade generates a personal reading from your complete birth chart — not just your Sun sign — using real astronomical data from Swiss Ephemeris.

What a Birth Chart is Not

A birth chart does not predict your future or determine your fate. It is a symbolic map — a framework for reflection, self-awareness and understanding patterns rather than a fixed prescription for what will happen.

Birth chart readings are for entertainment and self-reflection only. They should not be taken as advice in areas such as health, finance, legal matters or relationships.
