What are the 12 Houses in Astrology?

The twelve houses divide a birth chart into areas of life. Each house covers a specific domain of experience, and the planets that fall within a house — along with the sign on that house's cusp — add detail to how that area of life may be expressed.

How Houses are Calculated

Unlike zodiac signs (which are based solely on the orbit of the Earth around the Sun), houses are calculated from your birth location and birth time. They divide the sky as seen from your birthplace at the moment of your birth.

The most commonly used house system is Placidus, which divides the sky based on time — though other systems such as Whole Sign, Koch or Equal House are also used by different astrologers.

The Ascendant (Rising sign) forms the cusp (starting boundary) of the 1st house. The Midheaven forms the cusp of the 10th house. The remaining houses follow from these two anchor points.

Angular, Succedent and Cadent Houses

Houses are grouped into three types:

Angular (1, 4, 7, 10)

The most powerful houses, associated with the four angles of the chart. Planets here tend to be prominent and outwardly expressed.

Succedent (2, 5, 8, 11)

Follow the angular houses. Associated with resources, creativity, depth and community. Fixed in quality.

Cadent (3, 6, 9, 12)

Preceding the angular houses. Associated with transition, learning and preparation. Mutable in quality.

Houses and Birth Time

House positions change significantly with birth time. An accurate birth time — ideally from a birth certificate — is needed to know precisely which sign sits on each house cusp and which planets fall in which houses. Without a birth time, a noon chart or sign-based chart can still be useful, but house interpretation will be less precise.
